Winterthur - About the city
The formerly industrial town of Winterthur is in the Canton of Zürich and is the sixth largest town in Switzerland. With its old town, which dates from the middle ages, its generously sized gardens and parks and its variety of cultural activities and museums, Winterthur offers the flair of a big city and the local feeling of a small town: a perfect mixture.
Winterthur is known in the whole of Switzerland for its many events, among others the Music Festival, the Afro-Pfingsten (over Whit weekend) and the International Short Film Festival. Whoever is interested in culture always find something to their taste, whether they are looking for classical art or up-and-coming music groups. In Switzerland‘s largest pedestrian precinct one can stop off at one of the many cafés or take advantage of the rich variety of stores to go shopping.
Winterthur is ideal for trips in the surrounding area. Hills and woods can be reached in a short time from any point in the town, and the surrounding countryside is ideal for bike rides. It takes about half an hour to reach the centre of Zürich or the famous Rheinfall, and the airport is less than a quarter of an hour away.
